The Golden State Warriors will probably want to consign Wednesday January 10 to history as quickly as possible.

First Stephen Curry hurt his right ankle, for the second time this winter, during the shootaround before the Warriors faced the Clippers at Oracle Arena.

Then, without Curry and Klay Thompson in the lineup, the NBA’s best team by win percentage and common consensus went and lost to the Los Angeles Clippers. Badly.

Clippers guard Lou Williams, not so long ago the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, exploded for 50 points. Kevin Durant scored 40 and reached 20,000 points in the process on his return after three games out with a calf strain. But Durant got minimal support from the Warriors’ depleted roster, on a rare bad night for the defending NBA champion.

“I don’t think it’s serious,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said of Curry’s injury, which did not require an X-Ray or MRI according to the New York Post.

“I didn’t see anything,” Kerr said before the loss to the Clippers in quotes reported by ESPN. “We just had a normal shootaround and he was in his usual game day routine with Q [Warriors assistant coach Bruce Fraser] and he just rolled his ankle somehow,” Kerr continued. “Just kind of a fluke thing, kind of caught us off guard, but obviously he won’t play.”

Curry, who dealt with serious right ankle problems early in his career, including two surgeries, rolled his right ankle in a win over the New Orleans Pelicans in early December. The resulting sprain caused the point guard to miss 11 games, including the Warriors’ Christmas Day win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The 29-year-old, the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2015 and 2016, is averaging 27.9 points per game in the 28 games he has played this season. The Warriors, who are three games clear of the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference despite the loss to the Clippers, rested Thompson on Wednesday night.
